SOUTH POINT — The South Point Pointers’ soccer team wasn’t perfect, but they were close.

The Pointers beat the Huntington (W.Va.) St. Joseph Fighting Irish 6-2 on Saturday to register a school record 15 wins against just one loss.

“Going undefeated was our goal, but we were close,” said Pointers’ coach Zane Joy. “When we lost to Boyd County that just made us focus more, so it turned out to be a good thing.”

Although the Pointers were not unbeaten on the season, they were unbeaten against Ohio competition.

South Point jumped in front 3-0 in the first half.

Jordan Overstreet had an unassisted goal at 7:00. Trey Kearns used an assist by Matt Krivan to score five minutes later and then Brady Sloan scored off another Krivan assist in the 35th minute.

Ryan Webb’s unassisted goal got the Irish within 3-1 to begin the second half, but Krivan score as Gage Stephens got the assist in the 50th minute.

Two minutes later Micah Harris scored off Ethan Perry’s assist and a penalty kick by Alex Whitt at 68:00 finished off the Pointers’ scoring.

Jacob Gross had an unassisted goal for the Irish to complete the game’s scoring.

The Pointers host Marietta at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the sectional tournament.
