CHESAPEAKE — It was a good season, just not a good ending.

The surprising Chesapeake Panthers went 6-4 this season and finished second in the Ohio Valley Conference with a 3-1 record.

But four turnovers proved costly as the Panthers lost their season finale 30-0 to the Waverly Tigers on Friday.

“We didn’t play well and they’re not a bad team. We couldn’t sustain drives and we had too many fumbles,” said Panthers’ coach Andy Clark.

“We gave them a short field twice on turnovers in the second half. Offensively when we got something going, we’d shoot ourselves in the foot. Give them credit, they didn’t turn the ball over.”

Waverly (3-7) ran for 310 yards led by Devon Rigsby with 239 yards on 16 carries. R.J. Perkins ran nine times for 44 yards and was 4 of 10 passing for 41 yards.

Chesapeake managed 118 total yards with 76 coming on the ground. J.W. Bartrum ran eight times for 40 yards.

Rigsby had a 76-yard scoring run in the first quarter and a 22-yard TD jaunt in the second quarter as Waverly took a 15-0 halftime lead.

Waverly recorded a safety on the first play of the second half to go up 17-0.

Brian Cydrus scored on a 3-yard run and it was 24-0 with 8:53 left in the third quarter.

The Tigers capped the scoring when Rigsby got his third touchdown on a 24-yard run with 7:40 to play.
