When the Ohio High School Athletic Association announced the high school football postseason playoff pairings, there were no surprises.

The Ironton Fighting Tigers (7-2) were third in Region 17 of Division V as expected and will host the Martins Ferry Purple Riders (9-1) at 7 p.m. Saturday as predicted.

The same can be said for the Symmes Valley Vikings (6-4) who finished seventh in Region 25 of Division VII and will visit No. 2 seed Glouster Trimble (10-0) at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Trimble was the Div. VII state runners-up last season.

Ironton hosted Martins Ferry in the opening round of the 2000 playoffs and came away with a 43-7 win.

This marks the 31st postseason playoff appearance for Ironton, third most in Ohio football history.

Symmes Valley is making its 11th playoff appearance.

First round winners will advance to the regional semifinals. The winners of the 1-8 game will play the winners of the 4-5 games while the 2-7 winners and 3-6 winners will meet.

Also in Region 17, No. 1 Bishop Hartley (8-2) hosts No. 8 Portsmouth West (7-3), No. 2 Wheelersburg (9-1) entertains No. 7 Liberty Union (7-3) and No. 5 Coshocton (9-1) visits No. 4 St. Clairsville (10-0).

In Region 25, No. 1 Shadyside (9-0) will be at home against No. 8 Danville (6-4), No. 6 Harvest Preparatory (8-2) visits No. 3 Caldwell (10-0) and No. 4 Paint Valley (7-3) will host No. 5 Tuscarawas Catholic (8-2.

The finals are returning to Ohio Stadium in Columbus for the first time in 24 years. They have previously been held at Massillon and Canton.
