Major Cox

Oct. 1, 1927 — Nov. 16, 2014

 

Rev. Major Cox, 87, of Decatur, passed away Sunday, Nov. 16, 2014, at his residence. The Elliott County, Kentucky, native was born Oct. 1, 1927, a son to the late Curtis and Mertie Lewis Cox. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Betty J. Akers Cox, whom he married Sept. 22, 1950.

Mr. Cox was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He was an employee for the Ironton Coke Plant for more than 27 years, retiring in 1982. Mr. Cox was pastor of Decatur Apostolic Church from 1983-2004 and a member of the United Pentecostal Church International.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Estil Cox, Willis Cox, Sam Cox and James Cox; and two sisters, Goldie McFann and Mary Fulk.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Danny R. Cox, of Atlanta, Georgia; five daughters, Sue (Rudy) McDonald, of Ironton, Jeanette Trent, of Pedro, Naomi Vulgamore, of Boise, Idaho, Michele (Gene) Brown, of Ironton, and Wynie (Bob) Dalton ,of Ironton; 18 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and seven great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Great Faith Apostolic Church with the Rev. J.J. Sherrill officiating. Burial will follow in Kirby Flats Cemetery in Ashland with military graveside rites by the VFW Post 8850 and visitation will be 4-9 p.m. Friday from at the church. Nici Clement

Sept. 8, 1970 — Nov. 15, 2014

 

Lea Nicole “Nici” Clement, 44, of Ironton, loving wife and mother died Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014, at Cabell Huntington Hospital. She was born Sept. 8, 1970, in Springfield, a daughter of Robert Bowshier, of Ft. Pierce, Florida, and Nina Knisley Bowshier, of Ironton.

She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Cally Erica Jobe.

In addition to her parents, “Nici” is survived by her husband, Kyle E. Clement; a son, Dalton (Amber) Jobe, of Flatwoods; two daughters, Desiree Jobe and Lakyn Jobe, both of Ashland; two sisters, Gina (Kevin) Markins, of Coal Grove, and Kathy Bowshier, of Springfield; three brothers, Mike (Lisa) Bowshier, of Ft. Worth, Texas, and Shawn (Carrie) Bowshier and Terry Bowshier, all of Springfield; a grandson, Liam Jobe; mother and father-in-law, Dianne and Gene Clement, of Houston, Texas; a brother-in-law, Kenny (Christi) Clement, of Houston; a special friend, Missy Salyers, of Ironton; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

A memorial service will be 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Pine Grove Free Will Baptist Church in Ironton with minister Brent Baker officiating. The family will receive friends from 5-6:30 p.m. Thursday at the church.

Jacob Damron

Jacob Aaron Damron, 17, of South Point, Ohio, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 2014, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory in Proctorville. Burial will follow in Burlington Greenlawn Cemetery in South Point. Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Freda Eckles

Aug. 15, 1924 — Nov. 18, 2014

 

Freda Juanita Kuehne Eckles, wife of James E. Eckles, daughter of the late William and Lula Wilburn Kuehne, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2014, at a local health care facility.

The Lawrence County native was born Aug. 15, 1924, in Ironton. Juanita is a 1942 graduate of Hanging Rock High School and married her husband, James, in 1982. Mrs. Eckles was employed in the Ironton City School District for 30 years: a high school secretary for 23 years, and as a secretary-treasurer of the school district for seven years. She retired from the school district in 1981. Mrs. Eckles was a member of the 13th Street Baptist Church in Ashland.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two stepdaughters, Esther and Dale Barrett, of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, and Rebecca and Lowell Wilks, of Scott Depot, West Virginia; three sisters, Reba Lou and Everett Woodruff, of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, June and Paul Jenkins, and Jane Nelson, both of Ironton. Also surviving are six grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Eckles was also preceded in death by her stepmother, Mrs. Imogene Kuehne; and a brother and sister-in-law, Jerrold and Catherine Kuehne.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Phillips Funeral Home with pastor James Byrd officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery. Robert Howell

Robert Francis Howell died at his home in Thomasville, Georgia, on Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2014. Visitation will be 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Thursday at Bailey Family Funeral Home in Flatwoods. A graveside service will be 1 p.m. Thursday in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods with pastor Mark Wilson officiating. Sara Ann Thoman, 17, of South Point, died Monday, Nov. 17, 2014, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington. Funeral services will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at South Point High School.
