WELLSTON — Three was a bad number.

The Wellston Golden Rockets hit six 3-pointers and used a big third quarter to beat the Rock Hill Redmen 65-54 in the season opener on Friday.

The game was tied 10-10 at the end of the first quarter and the Redmen trailed just 26-25 at the half.

But Wellston outscored Rock Hill 27-12 in the third quarter to open up a 53-37 lead.

Rock Hill tried to rally in the fourth quarter by outscoring the Rockets 17-12 only to fall shorts.

Austin Collins led Rock Hill with a game-high 24 points. He also had 10 rebounds.

Austin Barcus added 14 points for the Redmen. Trystan Matneyhad nine rebounds and three steals while Jake Falls handed out five assists.

Wellston was led by Chazz Davis with 20 points and Ryan Hawk with 18. Davis had seven rebounds and Caleb Stanley six.

Rock Hill was 20 of 48 from the field for 42 percent but just 1 of 9 from behind the arc. Wellston hit 23 of 52 shots for 44 percent and 6 of 13 from the 3-point line.

Rock Hill visits Ironton St. Joseph on Thursday.
