SOUTH POINT — In the words of country music singer Robert Ellis Orrall, “Boom! It Was Over Just Like That.”

The South Point Pointers had a lead, then they trailed by just eight points starting the fourth quarter.

But then came the fourth quarter and Elliott County drained three straight 3-pointers to begin the final quarter.

“We played with them. We’re in the game and then they went Bam! Bam! Bam! And that was it,” said Pointers’ Travis Wise who was making his head coaching debut.

Collin Howell scored 22 points and Hunter Holbrook hit three treys as he scored 15 points to lead the Lions (2-0).

South Point (0-1) was led by Brady Rickard with 12 points. The Pointers were just 13 of 38 from the field for 34 percent. They scored just three points in the fourth quarter.

Elliott County was 25 of 55 from the floor for 45 percent.

“Elliott County is pretty good. They had a couple of big kids and we’re still working on our rebounding,” said Wise.

“They hit some shots and we didn’t shoot well. We missed a lot of shots in the lane. We just didn’t finish.”

The Lions led 13-9 at the end of the first quarter and it was 25-21 at the half.

Rickard scored 6 points in the third quarter as the Pointers took a 32-30 lead before the Lions rallied to go up 44-36 at the end of the stanza.

Elliott County then used its rapid fire shooting to open up a 53-36 lead and pulled away to the win.

“We young an inexperienced. We need to play and try and get better,” said Wise.

The Pointers played at Portsmouth Clay on Saturday.
