The St. Joseph Flyers are struggling right now, and the solution is very simple.

The Flyers shot 19 of 45 from the field but missed a lot of layups in a 60-54 loss to the Sciotoville East Tartans on Monday in the 7th annual Ironton Classic.

“We’re just not shooting the ball real well right now. We’ve got guys who can shoot, we’re just not putting the ball in the basket,” said Flyers’ coach Jeremy Williams.

“We had a lot of shots at close range and didn’t make them. You have to make those shots.”

Wulf Goheen had 15 points, 3 assists and 3 steals for the Flyers and Troy Scott added 11 points. Chris Lewis pulled down 9 rebounds.

East’s size advantage enabled the Tartans to out-rebound the Flyers 35 to 22. Tyler Gerald had 20 points and 10 rebounds, Akia Brown scored 19 points and Michael Stiltner had 12 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals.

East jumped out to a 12-3 lead to start the game and it was 14-8 at the end of the first quarter.

The lead was 22-14 when Goheen made a layup, Zac McGraw hit a 19-footer and Lewis made a layup to get within 23-18. But Gerald’s 3-point play made it 26-18 at the half.

The Tartans pulled away to a 34-21 lead with 5:42 left in the third quarter, but the Flyers cut the spread to 40-34 at the end of the quarter on a layup by Scott and two foul shots by Goheen.

Two free throws each by Scott and Goheen got the Flyers within 41-38 with 7:09 to play, but a layups by Stiltner and Blain Scott opened up a 45-38 lead.
