COAL GROVE — This was one time when they couldn’t keep up with the Jones.

Jacy Jones scored a career-high 36 points to lead the Coal Grove Lady Hornets to a 63-54 win over the Symmes Valley Lady Vikings on Monday.

Jones not only hit a couple of 3-pointers in her total, but she was deadly at the foul line as she converted 18 of 21 attempts.

“Both teams have been dealing with sickness. (Leah) Crum tried to do warm-ups and was too drained to continue the game,” said Coal Grove coach Rick Roach.

“I went to Jones and challenged her to take control of the game tonight. Due to the fact that we had two starters that could potentially not play any, she did. She played the whole game and attacked the basket and knocked down the free throws in the fourth quarter.”

Emily Compliment added 15 points and 8 rebounds for the Lady Hornets (5-2). Jones also had 7 assists and Summer Willis had 8 rebounds despite not being 100 percent.

Symmes Valley (1-7) was led by Kaitlyn Payne with 15 points and Breanna Brumfield had 10.

Jones scored 10 points in the first quarter as Coal Grove took a 14-12 lead. Payne and Brumfield had 5 points each for the Lady Vikings.

Compliment scored 7 points and Jones had 5 points including a 3-pointer as the Lady Hornets went up 30-23 at the half.

Coal Grove extended its lead to 47-35 at the end of the third quarter as Jones scored 9 more points.

Jones was 10 of 12 from the line and scored 12 points in the fourth quarter to prevent the Lady Vikings’ comeback attempt. Elly Fulks scored 7 points and Brumfield had 5 points for Symmes Valley.

Coal Grove hosts St. Joseph at 4 p.m. Saturday in the Paulus Classic.
