Dragons, Hornets fall in the Classic

The Fairland Dragons fell behind early, then made a furious rally in the fourth quarter to get within 7 points before losing 58-48 to the Columbus Africentric Nubians 58-58 Tuesday in the Ironton Classic.

The game was tied 12-12 after the first quarter before the Nubians went up 26-18 at the half.

The lead grew to 39-23 after three quarter and climbed to as many as 20 points in the fourth quarter before the Dragons began to make a comeback with 3-point goals.

Luke Thomas — who made three 3-pointers — had 12 points while Kollin Van Horn had 12 points and 5 rebounds. Chance Short had 8 points and 7 rebounds before fouling out.

Houston Smith scored 19 for Africentric, Jaquan Harrison had 15 and Lorenze Gordon-Haynes added 10.

In another Ironton Classic game involving a local team, Coal Grove jumped in front of Columbus Whitehall before the Rams used their press to reverse their fortunes and beat the Hornets 53-40.

Coal Grove led 15-7 after the first quarter, but the Rams went ot full-court pressure and forced 33 turnovers in the game.

Whitehall got within 24-23 at the half and went in front 36-32 after three quarters.

The Rams outscored the Hornets 17-8 in the fourth quarter to seal the outcome.

Brandon Adkins had 14 points and 9 rebounds for Coal Grove (1-4) while Austen Pleasants added 10 points and 7 rebounds.

Atonine Vaughn had 19 points and Tristn Ritchie 14 for Whitehall.
