The messages seen on ads through various media outlets are very clear: “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.”

That will certainly be the case over the next few days leading up to New Year’s Day when law enforcement throughout Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia ramps up patrols.

These efforts will look to crack down on those who choose to get behind the wheel of a vehicle while intoxicated by alcohol or under the influence of drugs.

While those efforts of the various law enforcement agencies are greatly appreciated to keep our roadways safer, police cannot do it exclusively on their own.

It is important for those who celebrate the holiday with any alcoholic beverages to make smart decisions and arrange for a designated driver or any other form of transportation. Additionally, it is vital for those who have a plan to encourage friends and family to develop a plan of their own.

Each year, we see, read or hear about hundreds of people who are killed by drunk drivers or those under the influence of drugs. In many cases, these tragedies could be avoided with smarter decisions.

If we just celebrate responsibly and smarter, the New Year can begin more safely and blissful.
