WILLOW WOOD — Do a better job, get better results.

That’s what the Symmes Valley Lady Vikings did Monday s they got past the South Point Lady Pointers 51-47.

“We did a better job of playing with composure and a lead late in the game,” said Lady Vikings’ coach Brandon Walker. “Still, we aren’t where we want but we will get there.”

Meranda Hayes scored 17 points to lead the Lady Vikings (2-8) while Elly Fulks had 14 points, 4 assists and 2 steals. Jensyn Shepherd scored 10 points.

The Lady Vikings were 20 of 51 from the field for 39 percent, their best shooting effort since the second game of the season.

They also had 34 rebounds as Kaitlyn Payne pulled down 10 boards and Breanna Brumfield 6.

“We knew coming in we had a size advantage and we tried to take advantage of that. We haven’t shot over 29 percent since the Green game which is our only other win, so we’re glad to finally hit some shots tonight,” said Walker.

Haley Rawlins scored 12 points and Abbey Winkler 10 to pace the Lady Pointers (2-8).

Symmes Valley took a 17-12 first quarter lead as Shepherd had 8 of her points. Adara Deeds scored all 4 of her points for South Point.

Each team had 14 points in the second quarter and it was 31-26 at the half. Hayes scored 6 points in the quarter while Rawlins got 5 for the Lady Pointers.

Winkler had 5 points including a 3-pointer while Rawlins and Madison Kearns scored 4 points each in the third quarter and South Point rallied to take a 40-38 lead.

But Hayes and Fulks combined for 9 points in the fourth quarter and the defense held South Point to just 7 points as the Lady Vikings came back to get the win.

The Lady Vikings play at Racine Southern at 1 p.m. Saturday. South Point visits Ironton on Monday.
