Christine Skeans

Feb. 24, 1923 — Jan. 7, 2015


Christine Pohlman Skeans, 91, of Orange Park, Florida, formerly of Ironton, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2015. The Portsmouth native was born Feb. 24, 1923, a daughter of the late Rev. George E. and Jennie Lawson Pohlman.

Mrs. Skeans was the valedictorian of her graduating class of 1940 at Pedro High School, where she played basketball, was in the band and orchestra. She was a former sales clerk for C.H. Parsons in Ashland for 15 years and the Baby’s Room in Lexington, Kentucky, for 10 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Lexington where she volunteered for God’s Pantry.

She is survived by two sons, Merrill G. Stephenson Jr., of Orange Park, Florida, and David Lee Stephenson, of Lexington; two sisters, Betty Jean Gill, of West Union, and Joy Ruggles, of Ironton; a sister-in-law, Virginia Pohlman, of Savannah, Georgia; a granddaughter, Glenda Smith, of Florida; and three great-grandchildren, Sean Bowles, Cody Snelgrove and Lily Snelgrove.

Graveside services will be noon Saturday in Woodland Cemetery with Dr. Wayne Young officiating. Visitation will be from 11 a.m.-noon Saturday at Phillips Funeral Home. To offer condolences to the family, please visit



Henry Mitchell

Sept. 22, 1947 — Jan. 2, 2015


Henry Clay Mitchell, 67, of South Point, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2015, at his residence. Clay was born Sept. 22, 1947, in East Rainelle, West Virginia, a son of the late Henry Clay and Virgie Mae Gobel Mitchell.

He was a U.S. Marine Corps Vietnam veteran serving from 1966 to 1970. Clay worked as a lineman for Buckeye Rural Electric for 34 years, was a member of American Legion Post 93, and an avid hunter, beekeeper and enjoyed playing baseball when he was younger.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Tina Hollingsworth.

Clay is survived by his wife, Kathy Miller Mitchell; two sons, Henry Clay Mitchell III, and Zachary Mitchell; one daughter, Dawn Mitchell; two stepdaughters, Melissa (Mike) Zollman and Angela Letterman; 10 grandchildren, Allison, Samantha, Camryn, Henry, Waylon, Charleigh, Kristin, Michael, Grant and Garrett; one great-grandson, Bentley Hunter; four sisters, Linda (Keith Donald) Mitchell, Loretta (Steve) Cavendish, Lois Boley and Regina (Steve) Kessler; a host of nieces and nephews; and his good friend, Ashby Leach.

There will be a memorial service to honor Clay’s life at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Schneider-Griffin Funeral Home in Chesapeake with pastor Tim Jenkins and pastor Evan Melvin officiating. Gary Donald Hesson, 74, of Chesapeake, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014, at his home in Sebring, Florida. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory in Proctorville.
