CHESAPEAKE — Balance was the key for the Logan Chieftains, along with a bad quarter by the Coal Grove Hornets.

Logan got balanced scoring and took advantage of a cold third quarter by Coal Grove to rally past the Hornets 56-50 on Saturday in the annual Beast of the Southeast.

Brandon Adkins scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Hornets (4-6). Travis Carey and Austen Pleasants added 9 points each and Joe Akers scored 8.

Logan (7-3) had three players in double figures as Lane Little scored 14, Chance Cox 13 and Kevin Fisher had 12.

Six Logan players scored while Coal Grove had only four players in the scoring column.

Adkins scored 8 points, Pleasants had 4 points and Carey hit a 3-pointer as Coal Grove jumped out to a 15-8 first quarter lead.

Akers and Adkins scored 6 points each in the second quarter and Carey busted another triple for the Hornets, but Little hit a pair of 3-pointers, Cox had 5 points and Isaiah Smith 4 points as Logan got within 30-25 at the half.

Coal Grove came out cold in the third quarter and scored just 6 points.

The Chieftains took advantage of the Hornets’ woes to score 14 points and grab a 39-36 lead.

Logan did most of its damage in the quarter at the foul line by connecting on 8 of 14 free throw attempts including 4 of 4 by Little.

The Chieftains were 7 of 10 from the line in the fourth quarter to help fight off a Coal Grove comeback. Adkins scored 7 points while Pleasants and Carey combined for the other 7 points.

Foul shooting proved to be a key for the Chieftains who converted 15 of 26 attempts while the Hornets made only 5 of 11 free throws.

Coal Grove hosts Chesapeake on Tuesday in an OVC game.
