With 6-foot-6 center Chris Lewis still out with an injury, the St. Joseph Flyers needed the other players to step up.

Up stepped Troy Scott.

The Flyers 6-3 senior forward scored 28 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and blocked 5 shots to lead St. Joseph to a 47-42 win over the Symmes Valley Vikings on Saturday.

“With Chris out, we need five or six guys getting four or five rebounds,” said Flyers’ coach Jeremy Williams.

“Troy had a big night. Zac McGraw rebounded well. We started well and then hit a lull in the first half, but the second half was better and we were able to finish tonight.”

Shawn Belville had 10 points for the Vikings (2-8). Collin Webb and Payton Hayes scored 8 points each while Matt Rutt and Webb had 8 rebounds apiece.

Scott scored 9 points in the first quarter as the Flyers took a 14-5 lead.

Rutt had 6 points in the second quarter as the Vikings cut the deficit to 22-15 at the half. Kyle Williams scored 4 points for the Flyers.

St. Joseph took a 35-27 lead after three quarters. The Vikings got 6 points from Hayes as they tried to rally in the fourth quarter, but Scott scored 9 points to end the comeback hopes.

St. Joseph hosts New Boston on Wednesday in their homecoming game. Symmes Valley entertains Portsmouth Notre Dame on Tuesday.
