COAL GROVE — Much like the facets on a kitchen sink, the Coal Grove Lady Hornets’ played hot and cold.

Despite their inconsistent play, the Lady Hornets got past the South Point Lady Pointers 44-39 on Monday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“We played with more intensity, but we were too sporadic for my liking,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Rick Roach.

“(Leslie) Mulkey did a great job disrupting their passes. (Jacy) Jones was able to knock a 3 in each quarter, but when they fouled us late we couldn’t know down the shots. They gave us some good looks defensively which we had to adjust to.”

Jones led Coal Grove (7-5, 5-2) with 20 points and Emily Compliment added 10.

South Point (3-10, 2-5) was led by Haley Rawlins with 13 points and Brooklyn Badgett scored 10.

Jones hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored 8 points in the first quarter as Coal Grove took a 15-10 lead. Kearns had 5 points including a trey for South Point.

Abbey Winkler had 4 points in the second quarter as South Point got within 21-17 at the half.

Jones scored 7 points and Kaylee Beals hit a 3-pointer as the lead went to 35-30. Rawlins and Badgett scored 5 points each for the Lady Pointers.

Coal Grove was able to convert only 2 of 8 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter but each team scored 9 points as the Lady Hornets held on for the win.

On Thursday, Coal Grove visits Portsmouth and South Point hosts Cross Lanes Christian.
