PROCTORVILLE — The shooting was impressive, but it was another statistic that caught the eye of Fairland coach Nathan Speed.

The Dragons racked up 27 assists to go with some strong shooting in an 82-59 Ohio Valley Conference win over the Rock Hill Redmen on Tuesday.

“We shot well but the big reason is we moved the ball really well,” said Speed. “We worked for the good shot and we got the ball to the open man.”

Fairland (10-3, 4-2) was 34 of 62 from the field for 55 percent that including 9 of 21 form behind the arc for 43 percent.

Chance Short keyed the offense with 22 points including 6 of 10 from the 3-point line while also having 5 assists. Kollin Van Horn had 18 points and 5 rebounds.

Leading the assist chart were Luke Thomas with 8 and Ty Staten had 7.

Austin Collins had a game-high 26 points — he was 10 of 15 from the foul line — and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Redmen (4-9, 1-6).

Short and Van Horn combined for 15 points as Fairland took a 16-10 first quarter lead.

Short — who had 14 points in the first half — got 6 more points in the second quarter and Van Horn added 5 more to help offset 12 points by Collins and the Dragons led 36-25 at the half.

It was the due of Short and Van Horn who again did the damage in the third quarter as Short scored 8 points and Van Horn 6 that enabled Fairland to open up a 59-36 lead.

Hayden James came off the bench to score 7 points in the fourth quarter for the Dragons.

On Friday, Rock Hill hosts St. Joseph in a non-league game while Fairland visits Ironton in an OVC game.

“That’s going to be a big test for us,” said Speed. “Ironton plays well at home. The beat Portsmouth there and took Chesapeake to overtime. We’ll have to play well.”
