SOUTH POINT — South Point coach Travis Wise wishes he could erase just 1:30 of the first quarter.

The closing moments of the first quarter proved to be the turning point of the game as the Portsmouth Trojans went on to beat the South Point Pointers 62-38 on Tuesday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

South Point trailed 10-7 when Portsmouth went on a 13-0 run to end the quarter and take a 23-7 lead.

“We had one bad stretch in the first quarter and we let it get away from us at the end and that happens. But for more than two and a half quarters, we played right with them,” said Wise.

Stephen Wagoner scored 5 points in the second quarter as each team scored 10 points and it was 33-17 at the half. South Point had 12 of its 19 turnovers in the first half.

Elijah Adams scored 6 points in the third quarter as the Pointers sliced the deficit to 40-25.

“Elijah really stepped up in the third quarter. He had some steals in there, too,” said Wise.

Portsmouth pulled away in the fourth quarter by outscoring South Point 22-13. Douglas Shaffer had 5 points off the bench for the Pointers.

Adams scored 10 points to lead the Pointers (2-12, 1-8). Wagoner had 5 rebounds and Alex Whitt grabbed 4 as the Pointers out-rebounded the Trojans 21-16.

Portsmouth (11-4, 7-2) was led by Sky Oliver and Kendall Reynolds with 11 points each.

The Trojans were 22 of 36 from the field for 61 percent and hit 4 of 10 shots from behind the arc.

South Point was 15 of 38 from the floor for 39.5 percent.

The Pointers play Wayne at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena at 3 p.m. Thursday.
