RACINE — Sonny Bono wrote it and Cher sang it, “It’s the little things that mean a lot.”

It must be a catchy tune because the St. Joseph Flyers were signing it en route to a 46-37 win over the Southern Tornadoes on Saturday.

The Flyers had a season-low four turnovers and nearly doubled the rebound total on Southern to help them improve to 8-8 with their sixth straight win.

“I’ve always told the kids that if we take care of the basketball and rebounds, everything else will take care of itself,” said Flyers’ coach Jeremy Williams.

Wulf Goheen had 21 points, six rebounds, 11 steals and three assists to lead the Flyers. Troy Scott added 10 points while Chris Lewis pulled down 10 rebounds.

Tristen Wolfe scored 16 points to lead Southern (6-8).

“Wulf had a good game again and Troy did a great job defensively on the Wolfe kid. I know he got 16 points, but Wolfe is a pretty darn good player,” said Williams.

Goheen buried three trifectas as he scored 11 points to help the Flyers build a 16-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. Jack Lemley had 6 of his 8 points in the quarter for Southern.

Wolfe scored 8 points in the second quarter as Southern cut the deficit to 25-23 at the break.

Scott scored 6 points as the Flyers went up 34-32 at the end of the third quarter.

The Flyers outscored Southern 12-6 in the fourth quarter as Goheen converted 7 of 8 free throws to seal the outcome.

“We played sound defense for three of the four quarters,” said Williams.

St. Joseph hosts Southern Ohio Conference leader Portsmouth Clay on Tuesday.
