WILLOW WOOD — The temperature dropped dramatically Saturday night, so the St. Joseph Flyers decided to build a fire.

And what a fire it was as they used some torrid shooting to burn the Symmes Valley Vikings 65-49.

The Flyers were 22-of-54 from the field for 41 percent but were 12-of-23 from behind the 3-point arc for 52 percent.

Throwing the most logs on the fire was Zack Kelly who hit seven 3-pointers and scored 23 points for the Flyers (10-9).

“We shot the ball pretty well and played well overall. Zack Kelly shot the ball really well and we had really good looks,” said Flyers’ coach Jeremy Williams.

“Kyle Williams didn’t score, but he made a huge difference. He passed up good shot for better shots and had a lot of assists.”

Troy Scott had a big game with 20 points and two steals, Wulf Goheen added 13 points and four assists, and Chris Lewis pulled down seven rebounds.

Scott and Goheen also had two 3-pointers each.

“We missed our first three or four shots and then we didn’t seem to miss after that,” said coach Williams.

Jacob Klaiber scored 12 points and Matt Rutt added 9 points and six rebounds for the Vikings (3-14).

Symmes Valley was 15-of-47 form the floor for 32 percent and 6-of-22 from the 3-point line for 27 percent.

Kelly hit a pair of 3-pointers and Scott had 5 points in the first quarter as St. Joseph took a 13-10 lead. Rutt had 4 of his points in the quarter.

Kelly really heated up in the second quarter with four shots from downtown as he scored 12 points. The Flyers had seven trifectas in the quarter as they outscored the Vikings 26-11 to lead 39-21 at the break.

The Vikings were 9 of 11 from the foul line in the second quarter.

Scott scored 8 points and Kelly added a 3-ball and two foul shots as the lead ballooned to 61-34.

Devin Eplin hit a pair of 3-pointers in the fourth quarter as the Vikings outscored the Flyers 15-4.

On Tuesday, St. Joseph hosts Beaver Eastern while the Vikings visit Rock Hill.
