PORTSMOUTH — There always seems to be an exception.

Almost everything went well for the Symmes Valley Vikings with the exception of the third quarter as they fell 49-37 to the Portsmouth Notre Dame Titans on Friday in a Southern Ohio Conference game.

“It was a good, physical game with tournament-like atmosphere,” said Vikings’ coach Donnie Saunders.

“Our defense wasn’t bad and we played hard, the Smith kid just hit those 3s in the third quarter and we couldn’t answer.”

The Vikings were trailing just 24-19 at the half when Notre Dame outscored the Vikings 17-6 in the third quarter as C.J. Smith knocked down four 3-pointers.

Symmes Valley (3-16, 2-10) led 7-3 at the end of the first quarter as Jacob Klaiber scored 4 points and Shawn Belville hit a 3-pointers.

Trevon Turner scored 10 of his 11 points in the second quarter as the Titans rallied to take the halftime lead. Belville hit another triple and had 5 points while Collin Webb scored 4 points in the quarter for the Vikings.

Symmes Valley outscored the Titans 12-8 in the fourth quarter as Jarod Sheppard had 6 of his 8 points.

Belville had 9 points, Webb 8 points and Klaiber 7 for the Vikings.

Smith’s 13 points led the Titans. Tyson Montgomery added 10 points.

The Vikings hosted South Gallia on Saturday and entertain Sciotoville East next Friday.
