Burglary case ends in 16-year prison term

A Proctorville man who broke into homes and outbuildings in Rome Township this past fall was sentenced to significant prison time Wednesday in Lawrence County Common Pleas Court.

Derek Childers, 31, of 175 Township Road 1055, received a 16-year prison sentence for two second-degree counts of burglary and four fifth-degree counts of breaking and entering, to which he pleaded guilty in January.

The man was also ordered to pay a total of $3,170 in restitution to five separate victims.

“I am remorseful for my actions,” Childers said at the hearing. “I was heavily under the influence of drugs.”

Childers was arrested in October following a month-long investigation into a rash of break-ins and burglaries between Elm Street and Cranford Lane in Rome Township.

Childers also pawned more than 80 items at various pawnshops in the area.

In other cases:

• William French, 35, of 1577 County Road 52, Ironton, admitted to community control sanctions violations and was sentenced to one year in prison.

• Susan Hanshaw, 52, of 719 County Road 15, South Point, was sentenced to seven years in prison for one third-, one second- and three fourth-degree counts of trafficking in drugs, to which she previously pleaded guilty. Of that seven-year sentence, one year was mandatory for a specification on the indictment that said Hanshaw was in possession of a firearm.

Cooper also ordered woman to pay a $7,500 fine, suspended her driver’s license for one year and ordered her to forfeit $2,831 that was obtained through selling prescription pills.

• Brandi Roberts, 24, of 301 Second Ave., Chesapeake, pleaded guilty to two fifth-degree counts of possession of drugs and a third-degree count of tampering with evidence. Sentencing was set for March 4.

• Ellen Yoder, 27, of 153 Private Drive 4374 State Route 217, Willow Wood, admitted CCS violations. Sentencing was set for Feb. 25.

• Chester Stamper Jr., 55, of 111 N. Seventh St., Ironton, admitted CCS violations that he failed to complete the STAR program as ordered by the court. The man was unable to finish because of health reasons and had been reporting to the adult probation department as ordered, according to Cooper.

Stamper was ordered to complete in-patient treatment at another facility to be determined.

• Kelli Vickers, 34, of 412 S. Ninth St., Ironton, was arraigned on and pleaded guilty to two third-degree counts of trafficking in drugs (Alpha-PVP). Cooper sentenced the woman to three years in prison, a $5,000 fine and a one-year driver’s license suspension.

• Aaron Workman, 27, of 512 State Route 373 Pedro, pleaded no contest to counts of third-degree tampering with evidence, fourth-degree burglary, fifth-degree possession of drugs and misdemeanor child endangerment.

Cooper set sentencing for March 18.

• Robert Joy, 55, of 87 County Road 618, South Point, pleaded guilty to an amended indictment of third-degree robbery. Judge D. Scott Bowling sentenced the man to two years in prison.

• Candice McFann, 29, of 181 Township Road 324, Pedro, pleaded no contest to a fifth-degree count of trafficking in drugs. Bowling set sentencing for Feb. 25.
