Pitching and defense go hand-in-hand. Just getting one working doesn’t always work.

Ironton got good pitching but three errors proved costly as the Fighting Tigers fell 4-2 to the South Webster Jeeps on Monday.

Dane Wilson went six strong innings and Larry Morris pitched a scoreless inning but Ironton still suffered its first loss in three games.

“Dane pitched well enough to win. He only gave up one earned run. And Larry Morris pitched well in relief,” said Ironton coach Larry Goodwin.

“We just did not execute on defense and allowed the one bad inning.”

Garrett Rawlins and Shane Zimmerman doubled as the Jeeps took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

Ironton tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Wilson walked and Luke Kelly reached on an error.

The Jeeps snapped the tie with three runs in the fifth inning.

Blake Fulk walked, Drew Dutiel reached on an error and Zimmerman singled for a run. Alek Blevins was safe on an error and Trevor Coriell doubled home two runs.

Ironton got a run back in the sixth on singles by Luke Diamond, Kelley and Hunter Klaiber.

Kelley went 2-3 for Ironton. Diamond and Klaiber were 1-3.

Ironton visits Portsmouth on Tuesday.
