GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) — Matt Kemp hit the first of San Diego’s three homers off Anthony DeSclafani — a new addition to Cincinnati’s rotation — and the Padres pulled away to a 6-3 victory over the Reds on Monday.

Kemp hit a two-run shot in the fourth inning for his fourth homer of the spring. Clint Barmes added a solo shot, and Yangervis Solarte had a three-run homer during the fifth inning.

“We saw some good swings from the middle of our order,” Padres manager Bud Black said. “You can see our power come through. That’s good to see as we get to April.”

DeSclafani gave up six runs and seven hits in six innings, including his first homers allowed this spring.

The Reds got DeSclafani from Miami in an offseason trade for Mat Latos and are counting on him to fill one of three openings in the rotation. They also traded Alfredo Simon to the Tigers, and Homer Bailey is expected to start the season on the disabled list while recovering from forearm surgery.

“DeSclafani made some mistakes and they were able to elevate the ball,” Cincinnati manager Bryan Price said. “Solarte’s was on an 0-2 pitch that he didn’t locate well. He made a couple other mistakes with 0-2 pitches. It wasn’t his best game. He had good stuff but wasn’t able to locate.”

Ian Kennedy shut out the Reds’ standard lineup on six hits for six innings. Catcher Devin Mesoraco was the only regular missing. Kennedy will start the Padres’ home opener against the San Francisco Giants.

TRAINERS ROOM

Padres: LHP Cory Luebke, who had two operations on his elbow, threw 30 pitches off the mound on Sunday and will repeat the process on Wednesday or Thursday.

Reds: Bailey will stay in Goodyear to pitch in minor league games when the Reds head for Montreal on Thursday. They are still deciding whether LHP Sean Marshall and OF Jason Bourgeois will stay in Goodyear or rehab in Cincinnati.

STARTING TIME

Padres: Kennedy had his second straight scoreless outing, extending his streak of shutout innings to 10. Kennedy struck out seven and walked one.

“He is a guy who pitches off his fastball, and it’s a good one,” Black said. “He’s been able to hold his velocity all spring. He threw some good sliders today, too.”

Reds: DeSclafani has one more start to get ready for the season. The Reds haven’t officially announced that he’s in the rotation, but they have stretched him to six innings in his last two starts, indicating that he will be part of it. His outing on Monday was his first bad one of the spring.

“They were not good pitches,” DeSclafani said. “I have to make better pitches than that. I got six innings. That’s good for saving the bullpen, but I have also got to keep my team in the game.”

DeSclafani’s next start will be Saturday in Montreal against Toronto.

Padres: RHP Brandon Morrow will pitch Tuesday night against the Kansas City Royals.

Reds: RHP Michael Lorenzen, trying for a spot on the major league roster, will pitch against the Milwaukee Brewers.

MINOR TRADE

The Padres traded LHP Alex Torres to the New York Mets for RHP Cory Mazzoni. Mazzoni is likely to be assigned to Triple-A El Paso.

REDS MOVES

The Reds optioned RHP Pedro Villarreal to Triple-A Louisville and re-assigned RHP Nate Adcock, INF Ivan De Jesus Jr, INF Irving Falu and catcher Kyle Skipworth to their minor league camp. They also released LHP Paul Maholm.
