PORTSMOUTH — Both the Coal Grove Lady Hornets and Portsmouth Lady Trojans had 12 hits.

The Lady Hornets just knew how to do more with their hits.

Coal Grove parlayed their 12 hits with six walks and two Portsmouth errors to post a 10-5 Ohio Valley Conference win on Monday.

“Offensively, all our hits contributed tonight,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Mitch Crum.

Kasey Murphy improved to 4-0 on the season as she picked up the complete game win. She struck out three, walked two, hit two batters, and all five runs were earned.

“(Murphy) didn’t have her best stuff tonight on th mound, but that was OK because the defense had our back. They stepped up and played great. Our outfielders got some work tonight. They came up with some big catches at crucial times in the game.”

Murphy also went 2-4 with three runs batted in to lead the offense. Lauren Meyer also went 2-4 with three runs scored and Mckenzie Moore was 2-4.

Leah Crum was 1-4 but had three RBI and Khylee Keaton was 1-4 with two RBI. Deanna Bentley, Gracie Riley, Racheal Webb and Brooke Blakeman all had one hit.

Portsmouth took a 2-0lad after two innings, but Coal Grove scored five times in the third inning.

Blakeman and Meyer singled, Bentley walked and Murphy hit a two-run double. Moore walked and Riley grounded out as a run scored. Keaton followed with a two-run single.

Portsmouth tied the game in the bottom of the fifth at 5, but Coal Grove regained the lead for good with a run in the sixth when Meyer, Bentley, Murphy and Crum all walked.

The Lady Hornets (4-0, 1-0) put the game away with four runs in the seventh.

Riley doubled and scored on a hit by Webb. Blakeman reached on an error amd Jeyer singled to load the bases. Murphy singled in pinch-runner Gracie Niece and Crum capped the rally with a two-run single.

Coal Grove visits Chesapeake on Tuesday.
