Maybe the Lady Fighting Tigers should change their name to the Lady Fighting Irish.

Ironton had the luck of the Irish on Saturday as the Lady Tigers were guilty of seven errors but still managed to beat the South Point Lady Pointers 4-2 in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“We had a rough day in the field today. Thankfully, the errors didn’t hurt us any worse than (South Point) did. Every team has a bad day, let this be ours!” said Ironton coach Missy Fields.

One of the keys to overcoming the fielding mistakes was the two-hit pitching of Kylee Metzger who also struck out two and walked two.

“Breanna had a big day and Kylee cranked one past the scoreboard. She has really come on this year. I am so proud of her efforts on the mound and at the plate,” said Fields.

“Some girls are not patient at the plate and they are swinging at bad pitches. We need to really work on that this week.”

Abby Hannah took the loss as she gave up six hits, struck out three, did not walk a batter but hit one.

Breanna Klaiber continued to swing a hot bat by going 3-for-3 with two doubles. Metzger helped her own cause with a home run, Zjaytia Black-Mize had a double and Aley Carmon was 1-3.

Abbey Winkler was 1-3 and Halie Powell 1-2 with a double for South Point.

South Point got a run in the first when Haley Rawlins and Hailee Powell reached on errors.

Ironton went up 2-1 in the third with Katie Burcham was hit by a pitch, Kenzie Cremeens reached on an error and Klaiber smacked a two-run double.

The Lady Pointers got a run in the top of the fourth to tie the game when Powell walked, Leah Lawson reached on an error and a passed ball.

But Ironton answered with a run in the bottom of the inning as Metzger unloaded her home run.

The Lady Tigers got an insurance run in the fifth when Cremeens reached on an error and Klaiber and Carmon singled.

Ironton is on the road this week at Rock Hill on Monday, Raceland on Tuesday, Fairland on Wednesday and New Boston on Thursday.
