AID — Tanner Mays and Dillon McFann must have watched the Spongebob episode of The Strangler. They figured out how to choke off a rally.

Ironton kept filling the bases, but Mays and McFann wiggled their way out of trouble as the Fighting Tigers left 10 runners on base and the Symmes Valley Vikings managed to post a 6-1 on Friday.

“McFann and Mays got in trouble and got out of it. That’s what you want to see out of your seniors,” said Vikings’ coach Chad Renfroe.

Mays got the win as he worked five innings, struck out seven, walked one, hit a batter and gave up four hits.

McFann went the final two innings and struck out two, walked one and gave up three hits.

Ironton coach Larry Goodwin lamented his team’s inability to drive in runs.

“Garrett pitched a good game. We could not get the clutch hit. We left too many runners on base,” said Goodwin.

Freshman Garrett Carrico worked five innings for Ironton and took the loss. He struck out one, walked one, hit two batters and only one run was earned.

Cody Rawlins pitched the sixth inning for Ironton and struck out all three batters he faced.

Symmes Valley (8-1) snapped a scoreless tied with four runs in the third.

Tyler Carpenter and Blake Bowen both reached on errors, Payton Hayes was hit by a pitch to load the bases, McFann hit a sacrifice fly and Mays slammed a three-run homer.

Ironton got a run in the top of the fifth on a hit by Andy Bruce, a walk to Richard Crockrel and Dane Wilson’s RBI single.

The Vikings came back to get two insurance runs in the bottom of the inning.

McFann and Mays singled, Jacob Klaiber was hit by a pitch, Cameron Meadows hit into a fielder’s choice as a run score and an error on the play scored the second run.

Ironton (5-4) had seven hits as Bruce went 2-for-3 and Wilson 2-4.

Mays was 2-3 with three runs batted in.
