FRANKLIN FURNACE — It was Young Guns III.

The St. Joseph Flyers turned to their freshmen and sophomores for a spark as they beat the Sciotoville East Tartans 11-5 on Saturday.

“We played Friday night and a game earlier in the day, so we were a little flat. But our younger guys got us going and gave us a spark,” said Flyers’ coach Brent Wirzfeld. “All the kids are contributing and we’re getting better.”

Chase Walters pitched 5.2 innings for the win as he struck out nine, walked three and hit a batter. Bradley Rist went the final 1.1 and had three strikeouts and a walk.

The Flyers (5-4) banged out 13 hits with Chris Lewis going 2-for-4 with a double and three runs batted in. Gage Butler was 3-4 and Daniel Davidson was 2-5 with a double and an RBI. Cole Willis and Zac McGraw had doubles.

Taylor Appling was 3-4 and Akia Brown 2-4 as East got nine hits.

St. Joseph took a 4-0 lead to start the game.

Tre Neal walked, Willis singled and Lewis had a two-run double. Jacob Clark walked and pulled off a double steal with Lewis. Butler then singled in a run and Seth Kelley reached on a missed third strike as a run scored.

East got two runs back in the bottom of the inning and closed to within 4-3 in the fourth.

But the Flyers erupted for seven runs in the sixth to lead 11-4.

Peyton Adkins reached on an error, Butler singled for an RBI, Kelley walked and McGraw had a two-run double.

Davidson singled home a run ad stole second, Neal had an RBI single, Willis doubled and Lewis had an infield hit as a run scored.

Clark then hit a sacrifice fly to cap the rally.

The Tartans scored two in the bottom of the sixth, but the Flyers got those back in the seventh.

David doubled and stole third, James Carter walked and moved up on a passed ball, and Clay Willis and Issac Walker followed with RBI singles.
