In baseball, you have to play a lot of pitch and catch. The Ironton Fighting Tigers got the pitch but not the catch.

Ironton got good pitching but committed six errors in a 5-0 loss to the South Point Pointers on Saturday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“A team cannot expect to win committing six errors in the field,” said Ironton coach Larry Goodwin.

“Dane Wilson came on in relief and pitched well. We will continue to work hard and improve in the deficit areas.”

Alex Whitt turned in seven solid innings for the Pointers. He gave up seven hits, struck out three and walked two.

Luke Diamond started and took the loss. Wilson came on in the third inning and struck out one, gave up three hits, one unearned run and did not walk a batter.

After a scoreless first inning, South Point got three runs in the second.

Chris Woodard and Douglas Shaffer doubled for a run to start the inning. Christian Prichard singled home Shaffer. Trey Kearns reached on an error as the third run scored.

The Pointers made it 5-0 in the third.

Taylor Hall was hit by a pitch and Woodard doubled him home. Drew Adams then reached on an error with Woodard thrown out at home.

Adams attempted to advance on the play at home and a throwing error on the play allowed Adams to score.

The Fighting Tigers had plenty of scoring chances but failed to capitalize.

Ironton threatened in the second when Hunter Klaiber reached on an error and Hunter Weber singled, but the rally was snuffed by a double play.

Luke Kelley and Klaiber singled in the fourth with one out but were stranded.

Diamond and Garrett Carrico singled to start the sixth, but Kelley lined out and Klaiber and Weber flied out.

Andy Bruce and Tanner Price walked in the seventh but Ironton could not get a clutch hit.
