In less than a month, several blocks on Second Street in downtown Ironton will transform from a busy thoroughfare filled with motorists to a collection of basketball courts when the annual Gus Macker 3-on-3 basketball tournament takes place on May 16-17.

While this annual event has become a staple for basketball players and an outlet to show their skills in a fun and safe environment, this is also a vital weekend for the city of Ironton and Lawrence County.

Not only does this draw players from the Tri-State and surrounding region, this event allows many businesses to see increased traffic that can provide a boost in sales.

These include vendors, restaurants, hotels and many others that will benefit from the thousands that will flock downtown during the weekend’s event.

Additionally, it is important to commend all of those who have volunteered their time and the sponsors who have provided their resources to make this event happen each year.

The Gus Macker basketball tournament affords many the ability to be involved in a positive and healthy activity.

We encourage residents to stop downtown during the tournament to take in some great basketball while having the ability to fellowship with neighbors and friends.

Lawrence County has a unique way of working together to make these events happen, and the ability for them to continue it is important to provide support.
