Lady Vikings win pair of SOC games

AID — Tuesday’s game was a big hit, so the Symmes Valley Lady Vikings made a sequel on Wednesday.

The Lady Vikings banged out nine hits each day as they beat the Portsmouth Clay Lady Panthers 9-5 on Tuesday and the Sciotoville East Lady Tartans 13-0 in five innings on Wednesday in a pair of Southern Ohio Conference games.

“We hit the ball well in both games. Even when we made outs, we hit the ball pretty well,” said Lady Vikings’ coach Jeff “Odie” Estep.

“We might not have knocked the cover off the ball like Roy Hobbs did in ‘The Natural,’ but we knocked it around pretty good.”

Symmes Valley (15-2, 11-0) had nine hits led by Kaitlyn Payne who was 4-for-4 with two runs batted in and Taylor Webb who also went 4-4. Stephanie Brown was 2-4 and Tiara Hatfield was 2-4 with three RBI.

Brown also got the win as she struck out five and did not walk a batter.

Clay (11-9, 8-3) was led by Tressa Carter who was 2-4 with a home run.

The Lady Vikings took a 3-0 lead in the first inning when Brown, Webb and Payne singled for a run, Hatfield grounded out for an RBI and a wild pitch scored a run.

Webb singled, stole second and scored on Payne’s base hit as the lead went to 4-0 in the second.

Symmes Valley scored three runs in the fourth inning to lead 7-0.

Brown, Webb and Payne single to load the bases. Hatifeld had two-run single and Autumn Keathley hit into a fielder’s choice as a run scored.

Clay got five runsi n the fifth, but the Lady Vikings got a pair of insurance runs in the sixth.

Webb and Payne singled and Keathley walked to load the bases. Webb and Payne then scored on a pair of wild pitches.

On Wednesday, the Lady Vikings blanked the Sciotoville East Lady Tartans 13-0 in five innings as Payne pitched a two-hitter.

Payne went 2-3 with a home run and five RBIs She had a three-run homer in the first inning to stake Symmes Valley to a 3-0 lead.

Payne had a two-run single in the second inning to extend the lead to 7-0.

Symmes Valley scored five runs in the third inning on three walks and singles by Caitlin Carpenter, Hannah Mays and Webb.

The Lady Vikings host Portsmouth Notre Dame on Friday.
