CHESAPEAKE — A South Point man is dead following a shooting at the home of a Chesapeake couple on Friday.

At approximately 10 p.m. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to 3493 County Road 31, or Big Branch Road, Chesapeake. On arrival they found one man lying on the front porch of the house.

According to a release from Lawrence County Sheriff Jeff Lawless, the suspect was standing on the porch with a handgun. He then stepped inside the home. Later he surrendered to deputies.

The victim has been identified as Ricky L. Crager, 57, of South Point. Arrested was William K. Elkins Sr., 54.

“Elkins came home and found his friend, Ricky Crager, at his home with Mr. Elkins’ wife,” according to the release. “An argument then ensued and Mr. Elkins Sr., shot Mr. Crager twice in the chest with a small handgun. Mr. Elkins Sr., then threatened his wife with the handgun.”

A Lawrence County crew attempted to revive Crager, but was unsuccessful.

An autopsy has been requested and is expected to be performed by the Franklin County Coroner’s office this week.

Elkins is in the Lawrence County Jail awaiting an arraignment in Lawrence County Municipal Court at 9:30 a.m. Monday.

“I met with Detective (Aaron) Bollinger and reviewed the evidence and have charged Mr. Elkins with aggravated murder,” Lawrence County Prosecuting Attorney Brigham Anderson said.

“Aggravated murder means the act was premeditated,” Anderson said.

It is a first-degree felony and carries a sentence of 20 years to life.
