Stowers Carolina Barbecue makes home in Lawrence County

SOUTH POINT — Huntington’s loss is Lawrence County’s gain.

Transplants from the South can get a little (chopped) slice of home at Stowers Carolina Barbecue, with the famed Lexington, North Carolina-style barbecue sandwich, complete with the vinegar-based sauce and red slaw that is iconic to the Piedmont.

Of course, the Kansas City-style flavor that Tri-State residents are accustomed to is also available with its thick, sweet sauce and traditional slaw, among other homemade classics.

About a month ago, Stowers Carolina Barbecue opened in South Point just down County Road 407 from Big Sandy Superstore.

It was a move owner Shawn Stowers, 43, said was both expected and unexpected. The Huntington native said the top portion of the building of his former location on Sixth Avenue was condemned, which lead to uncertainty about how long he could remain there.

“I was told to act fast,” Stowers said.

That was last winter and since then, Stowers has worked to bring his property in South Point up to code for food preparation.

Loyal customers of his five-year stint in Huntington were upset, Stowers said, but they followed the aroma of smoked pork across the river.

The new iteration of Carolina Barbecue is a take-out only option.

“I do it all myself,” Stowers said. “It is easier not to manage a dining room, too.”

That gives him more time to concentrate on his pulled pork and spare ribs, which are hickory smoked for 14 and five hours, respectively.

“The pork barbecue is my best seller,” Stowers said. “The ribs come in second.”

Stowers also makes his pinto and green beans homemade, both seasoned with Canadian bacon. He also features classic southern desserts, like peach cobbler and Georgia pecan cornbread.

“If you like pecan pie, you’ll like Georgia pecan cornbread,” Stowers said. “It’s a true dessert.”

Stowers also offers bulk orders, like a 10 pound tray of chopped barbecue for $10, slaw by the half-pint, pint and quart and trays of the desserts.

Stowers Carolina Barbecue is located at 257 County Road 407 in South Point and is open from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Friday and 1-7 p.m. on Saturday. It is closed on Sundays.
