Raffle to help pay for scholarship

A $5 raffle ticket could win you a pack of seats to the upcoming Marshall versus Ohio University football game, but that ticket will definitely help a local high school student pay for college.

The Ironton Kiwanis Club will sell raffle tickets for the six-seat reserved block for the Sept. 12 game in Huntington. The package — about a $300 value — is six seats on the 30-yard line and parking in the orange lot, about a five-minute walk to the stadium.

Kiwanis president, Steve Call, said the raffle will help fund the club’s annual scholarship program.

“We award one scholarship to a Lawrence County High School student,” Call said. “The big thing we focus on is high school students who are active in the community and who do a lot of community service. We are just trying to increase the amount we have so we can increase the amount we can give.”

The Kiwanis Club has given the scholarship since in the 1990s and any Lawrence County high school student is eligible.

The club also supports local Little League teams, the BackPack Buddies program, hosts Breakfast with Santa each December, sponsors Key clubs at Ironton and Green high schools and make hygiene kits for the county health department to give to students in need.

“We keep our money that we raise locally,” Call said.

Raffle tickets are available at Liberty Federal Bank in Ironton and Proctorville, as well as Citizens Deposit Bank. Tickets can also be purchased by calling Call at 740-533-4559.

The drawing will be at noon on Sept. 3 at the noon Kiwanis Club meeting at the Ironton City Center. Tickets will be sold up until the drawing.
