CHESAPEAKE — When you rush for more than 500 yards, somebody must be doing something right.

In the case of the Chesapeake Panthers, a lot of people did things right.

The Panthers racked up 533 total yards with 522 coming on the ground as they crushed the Oak Hill Oaks 56-6 on Friday in the season opener.

Maccoy Brown led the ground attack with 19 carries for 167 yards while J.W. Bartrum had 82 yards on nine attempts and scored four touchdowns.

“Our offensive line played pretty well. They got off the ball, they got good angles and stayed with their blocks,” said Panthers’ coach Andy Clark.

The Panthers’ defense limited the Oaks to just 16 net yards rushing and 147 total yards with only four first downs.

“We felt we played pretty well in all phases of the game. We were more physical and we beat them up front,” said Clark.

Quarterback Casey McComas got the scoring started with an 8-yard run just before the end of the first quarter. Wesley Stephens kicked the first of seven conversions and it was 7-0.

Bartrum then went to work with scoring runs of 14, 27 and one yards as the lead ballooned to 28-0.

Oak Hill halted the run as Lane Burdine hit Cody Swann with a 9-yard scoring pass to make it 28-6 with 1:48 left in the half.

But the Panthers didn’t waste any time as Ty Wilcoxon scored on a 1-yard run with 24 seconds on the clock and it was 35-6 at the half.

Bartrum ran 10 yards for a touchdown with 7:08 left in the third quarter for his fourth score of the night and it was 42-6.

The Panthers’ backups took over and Will Scott scored on a 14-yard run in the third quarter while Jordan Milelr had a 1-yard touchdown run with 2:41 to play to cap the scoring.
