Although the November general election is over two months from now, a variety of issues and faces will fill the ballots for residents throughout Lawrence County.

Over the next two months, candidates and supporters of various ballot issues will be out in full force trying to reach potential voters.

However, like any coach will tell you, things are not won and lost when the game is played, but rather in the preparation. The same can be said for voters, as it is vital to learn about those issues and candidates before heading to the voting booth on Election Day.

While the county is fortunate to have many opportunities to meet candidates through various functions, things like the candidate forums are not always well attended by residents.

It is certainly important for the candidates to promote their position, but it is also important for voters to garner all the information necessary to make an informed decision.

Ultimately, with the vast amount of information and the opportunity to learn about the candidates and issues that is available today, heading to the polls without this knowledge only hurts the voter.

Voting is a fundamental right and responsibility in our society, and we should always take advantage of any opportunity we have to help shape our communities, county, state and country.
