Pirates’ run past Dragons

WHEELERSBURG — If there was a letdown, the Wheelersburg Pirates didn’t seem to show it.
Coming off a season opening win over Ironton, the Pirates used a strong ground game to beat the Fairland Dragons 42-8 on Friday in a non-league game.
The Pirates (2-0) ran 31 times for 282 yards as Keaton Newsome carried four times for 90 yards, Kyle Davis six times for 69 yards and two scores, and Jordan Howard 11 times for 59 yards and two touchdowns.
Sydney Tucker ran 6 yards for a touchdown with 28 seconds left as the Dragons avoided the shutout. Joel Lambiotte passed to Ty Staten for the conversion.
Lambiotte was 8-of-13 passing for 46 yards and an interception.
Fairland (0-2) finished with 185 total yards including 139 on the ground.
Wheelersburg led just 7-0 after the first quarter on a 45-yard run by Davis.
The lead went to 14-0 with 8:54 to play in the half on a 5-yard run by Davis. Howard scored from 6 yards out with 3:16 left and Jake Darnell returned an interception 45 yards for a score with 1:50 left in the half to make it 28-0.
Howard’s 7-yard scoring pushed the lead to 35-0 to create a running clock with 5:07 left in the third quarter.
Newsome’s 32-yard run in the fourth quarter capped the Pirates’ scoring.
Fairland hosts Tolsia, W.Va., next Friday.
