Lady Pointers pick up tough conference win

It was tough, but it was a win.

The South Point Lady Pointers were locked in a tough volleyball battle with the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers but they managed to come away with a four-set Ohio Valley Conference win on Tuesday.

“Tonight was an all-around effort from our girls,” said Lady Pointers’ coach Allen Perry. “We played better as a team. The girls were able to fight through adversity and pick each other up.

“Ironton has some big hitters and we were very fortunate to come away with this victory.”

South Point won the first game 26-24 and then took the second set 25-11. But Ironton back to win 25-19 before the Lady Pointers got a 25-21 win in the fourth set to win the game.

Olivia Abner had 13 hits and Mackenzie Fugitt 8 kills to lead the South Point offense. Hope Aylsworth was a key contributor in the clutch down the stretch with six aces and a team-high 13 digs.

South Point won the reserve match in two sets.

The Lady Pointers host Fairland on Thursday. Ironton visits Rock Hill on Thursday and hosts its Volleyball Showcase at 10 a.m. Saturday.
