PROCTORVILLE — Turnovers can turn a game.

After leading 7-6 at the half, turnovers took their toll on the Fairland Dragons as the Portsmouth Trojans rallied in the second half to a 35-7 win in their first-ever Ohio Valley Conference game.

The Dragons (0-4, 0-1) were hurt by five turnovers including a “pick six” that capped the scoring.

Portsmouth (2-2, 1-0) had 269 total yards led by quarterback Cole Lowery who was 9-of-19 passing for 128 yards and two touchdowns. Lowery also ran 17 times for 83 yards.

Austin Hollins had a big game for the Trojans with four carries for 52 yards and five receptions for 94 yards and two scores.

Fairland (0-4, 0-1) had 222 total yards. Collin Damron ran 18 times for 89 yards and quarterback Joel Lambiotte was 5-of-13 for 65 yards but was intercepted four times.

After an interception, Portsmouth went 69 yards in seven plays to score as Hollins ran 39 yards. The conversion run failed.

Fairland answered with a 60-yard, seven-play drive capped by a 10-yard scoring strike from Lambiotte to Keedrick Cunningham. Damron kicked the point after and the Dragons had a 7-6 lead.

The Dragons drove to the Trojans’ 24 but fumbled the ball away and Portsmouth went 76 yards in eight plays to take the lead on a 28-yard pass from Lowery to Hollins.

Darray Richardson ran for the conversion and it was 14-7.

Fairland was stopped short on a fourth-and-1 on its next possession and Portsmouth scored four plays later as Lowery hit Hollins with an 18-yards scoring strike. Zach Delotell’s conversion made it 21-7.

Fairland was forced to punt from their goal line and Amaru Carter returned the short kick back to the Dragons’ 13. Three plays later Austin Mullins scored on a 1-yard run and it was 28-7 with 7:14 to play.

The final Portsmouth touchdown came when Ryan Williams returned an interception 16 yards for the score with 4:07 to go.
