Backfield balance keys Pointers’ win

SOUTH POINT — It was the three Musketeers’ backfield.

Hunter Starr, Davon Leonard and Reed Murnahan combined for 214 yards rushing and four touchdowns as the South Point Pointers beat the Fairland Dragons 32-8 on Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

Starr ran 24 times for 84 yards and a touchdown, Leonard 10 times for 82 yards and a score, and Murnahan 13 attempts for 48 yards and two TDs as the Pointers improved to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the OVC.

The South Point offense racked up more than 300 total yards while limiting Fairland to less than 100 yards until the final minute of the game.

The Pointers’ defense force four turnovers including two interceptions, one by Leonard for a touchdown.

After a scoreless first quarter, Leonard bolted 44 yards for a touchdown with 7:46 left in the half and Murnahan’s conversion kick made it 7-0.

The Pointers got a 2-yard touchdown run by Murnahan at the 7:58 mark of the third quarter and it was 13-0.

Starr scored on a 1-yard run just 19 seconds before the end of the third quarter and the lead grew to 19-0.

Murnahan’s 4-yard scoring run with 4:12 to play opened up a 25-0 lead and Leonard returned an interceptions 37 yards for a touchdown 30 seconds later and Justin Taylor’s conversion kick put the Pointers ahead 32-0.

Fairland (0-5, 0-2) avoided the shutout when Chase Fisher had a 3-yard scoring run with 14 seconds to play.

Joel Lambiotte passed to Ty Staten for the conversion.
