CHESAPEAKE — A 9-day break couldn’t have come at a better time for the St. Joseph Female Flyers.

St. Joseph used the layoff to heal some injuries to Lynsey Booker and Emma Saxby, and the rest and recovery paid dividends as they helped the Female Flyers blank the Chesapeake Lady Panthers 7-0 on Wednesday in a soccer game.

“We’ve been battling multiple injuries and at times we haven’t even had 11 players on the field in previous games,” said St. Joseph coach Kyle Weatherholt.

“We possessed the ball better tonight than any game yet this season. Lynsey Booker and Emma Saxby played great after recovering from injuries.”

Booker scored the first two goals of the game with Kaylee Sheridan getting an assist on each shot.

Saxby made it 3-0 with an assist from Ophelia Weatherholt and then Sheridan got her own goal with an assist from Weatherholt.

Saxby, Booker and Weatherholt each scored a goal in the second half. Weatherholt and Saxby had assists while Saxby’s goal was unassisted.

“When we don’t allow the other team to get turned with the ball and running at us in the midfield, we’ve had good results,” said coach Weatherholt.

“Ivie Hopkins and Natalie Heaberlin did a great job of controlling the midfield tonight and we were able to keep the ball on the attacking end most of the night.”

St. Joseph plays at North Adams on Saturday.
