West burns Dragons

WEST PORTSMOUTH — Those ugly turnovers reared their heads again.

Turnovers plagued the Fairland Dragons in a 41-6 loss to the Portsmouth West Senators on Friday.

Fairland (0-9) turned the ball over on three interceptions after no turnovers last week in a 20-13 loss at Coal Grove.

West (4-5) drove to the Fairland 13-yard line to start the game but the Dragons held on a fourth-and-2.

Fairland was forced to punt and the Senators went 46 yards in eight plays as Job Swords scored on a 2-yard run. T.J. Hoggard’s conversion kick made it 7-0 just before the end of the quarter.

West used a 3-yard pass from Brady Douthat to Adam Baker to cap a 58-yard, 10-play drive and it was 14-0.

The Dragons were at their own 1-yard line when Braedon Oliver intercepted a pass and returned it to the one setting up Swords’ second scoring run for a 20-0 lead.

A 74-yard hook-and-ladder play saw Kedrick Cunningham run74 yards to the West 1-yard line. Sidney Tucker scored on the next play and it was 20-6 with 29 seconds left in the half.

An interception to begin the second half gave West the ball at the Dragons’ 20 where Wesley Bailey scored six plays later and it was 27-6 with 7:52 on the clock.

Fairland punted on its next series and Swords’ 34-yard punt return set up a 2-yard touchdown run by Wesley Robinson for a 34-6 lead.

Swords’ interception return to the 8-yard line set up a 7-yardd scoring run by Chase Lenegar with 7:13 left to cap the scoring.

Fairland hosts Rock Hill on Friday to close the season.
