With the holiday season kicking off, members of the American Legion Post 433 in Ironton are hoping to help veterans in nursing homes throughout Lawrence County.

A donation drive was Friday at the intersection of South Third Street and Marion Pike.

Bill Caines, the post adjutant for 433, said the group is raising funds to help more than 60 veterans for Christmas.

“If they need socks, pajamas, a case of pop, whatever they want,” he said.

He said the Legion works to help both active and disabled veterans, and also aids veterans in locating family members for the holidays.

Drivers donated as Legion members stood in traffic, with a good portion of vehicles stopping.

Caines said anyone who would like to donate to the effort can send a check in care of the American Legion Post 433 at P.O. Box 433, in Ironton, OH 45638 or call 740-532-7359.
