NEW BOSTON — When the shots wouldn’t fall, the St. Joseph Flyers did.
The Flyers shot just 17-of-49 from the field and a mere 2-of-16 from the 3-point line in a 50-47 loss to the New Boston Tigers on Tuesday in the season opener.
“We struggled to put the ball in the basket and couldn’t get stops on the defensive end at crucial times,” said Flyers’ coach Kevin Sheridan.
“We weren’t aggressive enough in the first half attacking them on the offensive end. We came out in the second half and were we much more aggressive on both ends of the floor.”
Chase Walters had 17 points to lead the Flyers. Zac McGraw added 9 points.
New Boston (1-0) was led by Kyle McQuithy with 18 points while Ethan Porter and Drake Truitt added 10 points each.
“Chase Walters played well on both ends of the floor. As a team we still have a lot of work to day,” said Sheridan.
McQuithy hit three 3-pointers in the first quarter to offset 7 points by Walters as New Boston took a 13-11 lead.
St. Joseph cut the deficit to 19-18 at the half, but McQuithy scored 5 points in the third quarter as the Tigers went up 35-30. Walters had 6 points in the quarter.
Tyler Ward scored 5 points and McGraw and Payton Adkins added 3-pointers as the Flyers outscored the Tigers 17-15 but fell just short.
St. Joseph visits Portsmouth Notre Dame on Saturday.
