The St. Joseph Flyers took an extended halftime break without the consent of coach Kevin Sheridan.

The Flyers had a sluggish third quarter and the Portsmouth Clay Panthers took advantage of the situation to blow the game open en route to a 69-47 win on Tuesday.

“We came out flat as can be. There was no energy at all tonight. If we cut into the lead at the beginning of the third quarter, it’s a whole different ball game,” said Sheridan.

Tyler Ward and Chase Walters scored 14 points each to pace the Flyers (2-8).

Nate Hinze scored 22 points to lead four players in double figures for Clay. Cole Gilliland had 17 points, Brody Riffe 11 and Cameron King 10.

Clay (7-2) took a 17-12 first quarter lead as Riffe scored 7 points and Hinze got 6. Walters scored 6 points to keep the Flyers close.

Gilliland scored 6 points in the second quarter as Clay went ahead 34-22 at the half.

The Flyers’ offense stagnated in the third quarter as Clay outscored St. Joseph 18-9 with Hinze getting 10 points and the lead was 52-31.

Ward and Walters scored 6 points each in the fourth quarter while the Panthers had six different players score.

St. Joseph visits Symmes Valley on Saturday.
