There are still a couple good months of winter left, but the Lawrence-Scioto Solid Waste Management District is already looking ahead to spring cleaning season.
“We’ve had a lot of emails and calls of people wanting to know when our events will be,” Dan Palmer, district coordinator, said.
The first event of 2016 will be the Shawnee Park Cleanup March 28-April 1.
In April the LSSWMD will host its drug take back days. April 15 will be the Scioto County take back. Lawrence County’s event will be from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. April 16 at the Ironton Hills Plaza. Last year, 67 vehicles drove up to the drop off site and 136 pounds of pills were collected, as well as 75 pounds of sharps and 65 pounds of liquid medications.
Next up is the Lawrence Countywide Cleanup Day, which starts at 9 a.m. on May 7.
Palmer said groups that have participated in the past should have received reminder letters and any person or group who did not receive a letter should call the district office to sign up.
May 14 will be the Lawrence County Document Shred/E-Waste Day. That event will be from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Ironton Hills Plaza.
Last year, 4,440 pounds of documents were shredded and 1,700 pounds of E-waste, such as computer and printers, were discarded.
The Ohio River Sweep will be from 9 a.m.-noon on June 18 and the Household Hazardous Waste event will be from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Sept. 24 at Dow Chemical.
Rounding out the year will be the Christmas tree recycling program.
For 2015, 151 trees were recycled to be placed in Lake Vesuvius as fish habitat.
“I’m pretty pleased with that,” Palmer said.
Palmer said Ironton will have a citywide cleanup but that date hasn’t been ironed out yet. Also, the district has applied for grants from the Ohio EPA, which if received, would allow for a tire cleanup event.
