SCIOTOVILLE — Now that’s how you approach the game mentally.

Despite playing the best team in the Southern Ohio Conference Division I, the St. Joseph Flyers refused to back down before losing 75-59 to the Sciotoville East Tartans on Saturday.

“Our intensity was much better tonight, we had four players in double figures for the first time this year and we did a better job taking care of the ball,” said Flyers’ coach Kevin Sheridan whose team had just 10 turnovers.

St. Joseph opened the game strong as Tyler Ward scored six points and Judge Williams added four points including a 3-pointer and the Flyers led 12-11.

But East (12-1) was 6-of-10 from the foul line in the second quarter and outscored the Flyers 22-6 to take a 33-18 lead at the half.

“We got in foul trouble in the second quarter and put them at the line too much, and we didn’t have an answer for their big kid,” said Sheridan.

Blaine Scott — the burly 6-foot-5 center — finished with 24 points including 17 in the second half.

The Flyers came out the second half and outscored East 23-20 to make it 53-41.

Williams scored seven points, Ward six points and Isaac Whaley added five points in the quarter for the Flyers.

St. Joseph cut the deficit to seven points early in the fourth quarter, but the Tartans’ Drew Lowe hit a 3-pointer to put the lead at 10.

Scott then scored 10 points and Lowe added nine points in the quarter as East began to pull away.

Ward scored 16 points and Williams had 15 to lead the Flyers (2-10). Chase Walters scored 13 and Clay Willis added 10 points.

Besides Scott, Lowe finished with 18 points and Akia Brown added 12.

The Flyers host Portsmouth Notre Dame on Wednesday.
