COAL GROVE — What size advantage?

Gallipolis might have had a size advantage, but the Coal Grove Lady Hornets ignored the fact as they posted a 55-50 Ohio Valley Conference win on Thursday.

Emily Compliment scored a game-high 24 points and Lauren Crum had 10 points as Coal Grove improved to 6-10 and 3-8 in the OVC.

“Compliment stepped up and too the difficult shots over their tall post players. (Destiny) Dolen was a key factor inside. She was ablt to pick up multiple steals, rebounds and dropped in some key baskets,” said Coal Grove coach Rick Roach.

“I can’t say enough about our subs. (Bailee) McKnight came in and gave us good quality minutes when (Kaylee) Beals wasn’t hitting her shots. (Amaya) Waulk also came in and showed her strength against Gallia’s kids despite the 6-inch plus height advantage. I was really proud of the enthusiasm and team effort displayed tonight.”

Gallipolis (2-12, 2-9) was led by Jalea Caldwell with 17 points. Adrienne Jenkins had 13 points and Jordan Walker added 10.

“Caldwell is quick and she was able to get to the basket,” said Roach. “Everyone on both sides gave a great effort. It was real fun to watch and to be a part of.”

Gallipolis got eight points from Caldwell and Hunter Copley scored five to lead 16-12. Compliment had eight points in the first quarter for Coal Grove.

Each team scored 15 points in the second quarter as Gallipolis led 31-27 at the half.

Jenkins had seven points in the quarter while Compliment and Crum combined for 10 points.

The Lady Hornets rallied to take the lead in the third quarter as they outscored the Blue Angels 14-9 to make it 41-40. Walker scored six points in the quarter for Gallipolis.

Coal Grove managed to outscore Gallipolis 14-10 in the fourth quarter as Compliment scored eight points including 2-of-2 at the line. Kasey Murphy added four points and Crum hit 2-of-2 free throws.

Jenkins scored six of Gallipolis’ 10 points in the quarter.
