COLUMBUS (AP) — Legislation is being proposed in the Ohio House that would require people to surrender firearms to law enforcement agencies if they’ve been convicted of domestic violence or served with a civil protection order.

The bill also would allow judges to order the surrender of firearms while a temporary restraining order is in place.

The bill, introduced Tuesday by suburban Cleveland Democratic Reps. Nickie Antonio, of Lakewood ,and Janine Boyd, of Cleveland Heights ,was meant to mirror federal law.

That law prohibits gun possession by people convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence charges and subject to permanent protection orders.

Antonio says the legislation closes gaps making it easy for domestic abusers to access guns.

FBI data shows 185 people shot to death in Ohio in domestic violence cases in the past decade.
