CHESAPEAKE — The Sybene-Chesapeake Senior Center received a donation from AEP on Wednesday to help with the upcoming senior day the center has set for May.
O’Tello Banks, John Buck and Norm Campbell, from the company, stopped by in the afternoon to deliver a check for $1,000 to center director Darlene Green for use toward the annual event at the Lawrence County Fairgrounds.
“AEP Ohio is pleased to provide $1,000 to support the Lawrence County Senior Citizens Organization’s third annual Lawrence County Senior Citizens Day event,” Banks, a customer services account representative for AEP, said. “We believe this event plays an important role in the overall effort to make county residents aware of the services that are available to them, while at the same time, making those services more easily accessible.”
The event will be from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. May 17 and draws hundreds of seniors and features vendors, entertainment, food and door prizes.
Green said 52 vendors took part last year and drew a crowd of 800 seniors.
This year, the center is hoping for 1,500 attendees. Some of the booths this year will include Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital, King’s Daughters Medical Center, the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department, who will be discussing gun safety, and local banks, who will be educating about fraud aimed at seniors.
Greene said she is hoping for an increased amount of vendors as well.
“The booths are to let seniors know what’s out there for them,” she said.
Admission to the event will be free and open to the public.
