WEST PORTSMOUTH — There was good news and bad news for the Green Bobcats.

Green started the season on Saturday with a 10-0 mercy rule win over the West Union Dragons and then had a defensive breakdown in a 10-2 loss to the Portsmouth West Senators.

W got our feet wet and got into the season. We’re starting three freshmen and only a couple of seniors so we’re pretty young. It was a good experience for everyone,” said Green coach Dan McDavid.

“We played well and hit well in the first game. We got off to a good start against West but then we couldn’t get any key hits and defensively we made too many errors and they took advantage of our mistakes.”

The Bobcats went up 2-0 in the bottom of the first when Josh Karshner doubled home two runs

Green added a run in the second and fifth innings and then erupted for six runs in the sixth inning to end the game.

Tyler Darnell, Tayte Carver and Karshner all had rbi singles and Trevor Carver capped the rally with a two-run double to end the game.

Karshner got the win as he struck out seven and walked only one.

Tayte Carver was 2-3 with two runs batted in and Karshner wa 2-4 with a double and two RBI.

Against West, Tanner Kimbler, Tayte Carver and Karshner all singled for a run and Trevor Carver grounded out as Green took a quick 2-0 lead.

But West used a couple of errors to score three times in the second and then used three errors in the fourth inning to score six more runs.

The first nine runs West scored were unearned.

The Bobcats had 10 hits with Kimbler going 3-4, Karshner and Tayte Carver 2-4 and Rylee Maynard was 1-2.

Green hosts Rock Hill on Monday.
